What We Do

The company is recognised internationally as being the leading provider of labour market intelligence for the heritage sector. We have experience of project management, ranging in scale from micro- to macro-; the largest projects we have managed have been multi-annual activities involving up to 23 internationally distributed partners.

Landward has worked as consultants and developers of E-learning Development and Delivery, where the company has extensive experience of designing training course content, matching learning materials to occupational standards, authoring targeted development materials, developing e-learning modules and delivering these through Learning Management Systems.

We have undertaken consultant work for a wide range of UK and European clients, including on several projects supported by the European Commission. We also work with a wide range of subject matter experts who we can bring to projects as necessary.

Landward Research specialises in website and software development especially for the cultural sector. We are able to work with clients and partners to build platforms based on the very specific needs of the individual organisations.

Labour Market Intelligence

We help you plan by informing cultural organisations, educators, trainers and individuals of current market positions and trends.

Profiling the Profession 2020 is a survey of employment and training in professional archaeology in the United Kingdom. This is the fifth in a series of surveys that began in 1997-98, which has allowed for longitudinal, time-series datasets to be built up that describe the changing nature of professional archaeology over the past quarter-century.

Data were gathered that applied to archaeological employers and individuals working in archaeology in March 2020 – immediately before the Covid-19 pandemic began to seriously affect working practices and immediately after the UK left the European Union. The project has captured the time-sensitive critical data required to understand how these events have impacted upon the sector, including data on employment conditions, staff qualifications, diversity and training issues.

Landward Research Ltd were delighted to have been commissioned by Historic England to assess skills needs and other labour market intelligence issues in the fields of buildings history, garden history and archaeological specialisms. This project was a successor to the Survey of Archaeological Specialists 2010-11 and Atkins 2008 “Identifying Activity and Skills Needs in Buildings History: Final Report”.

Project
Management

We develop, design and using the PRINCE2® approach deliver projects and can assist on any stage of the process you require.

ALGAO: England commissioned Landward Research to develop an understanding of local authority archaeology services structures and what contributes to their success or failure, to assist local authorities in supporting effective archaeology services.

This project design created a methodology that would establish and support better heritage and cultural enterprises that result in greater community solidarity and by doing so reducing the number of people being lost to The Gambia throughirregular migration. This project design also ensured that the project would deliver training in business & management skills for heritage and traditional cultural workers – in areas where there are distinctively Gambian traditions, such as weaving, leatherwork, music and even Gambian wrestling!

Following that presentation, Landward were commissioned by FAME and ALGAO: Scotland to work with AOC Archaeology Group and colleagues throughout Scotland involved in both the commercial and curatorial sides of development-led archaeology to capitalise on that presentation by putting together a publication showcasing a series of case studies that demonstrated the sector’s resilience in the face of the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Consultancy

We are informed and connected – in a sector that values knowledge – that puts us in the right place to provide the best consultancy advice.

FAME is the distinctive voice of archaeological employers and managers, and the only organisation solely devoted to representing their interests within the profession and the business world. Landward Research Ltd provides FAME with an embedded CEO (Kenneth Aitchison) and Deputy CEO (Doug Rocks-Macqueen), who manage the day to day activities of the trade association for commercial archaeology companies in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland, together with providing advocacy and strategic advice for the association.

Landward Research Ltd are delighted to have worked with the South Downs National Park Authority to produce Guidelines for the Stewardship of Heritage Assets in Forestry Management, as part of the Secrets of the High Woods programme.

Coralie Mills of Dendrochronicle and Gordon Brown of John Clegg & Co worked with Doug Rocks-Macqueen to write these guidelines, which Landward Research Ltd are very pleased to have published on behalf of SDNPA. Quonya Huff designed the publication, which showcases Landward’s expertise in working collaboratively at the interface between heritage and natural environment.

In order to meet the emerging challenges of integrated archaeological and natural heritage, the ANHER project aimed at achieving four intertwined objectives:
(i) the production of training materials covering a wide range of issues of integrated archaeological and natural heritage,
(ii) the development of the E-Archaeology Content Repository – a kind of interactive database for uploading, storing and producing training materials in the domain of archaeological and natural heritage,
(iii) the development of methodology of content preparation and delivery using e-learning solutions providing efficient tool supporting the entire didactic process,
(iv) creation of Centers of Integrated Heritage Teaching Excellence along with the Heritage Educational Portal (HEP).

Web/Software Development

We specialise in website and software development to develop databases, learning platforms and varies interfaces for your organisation’s needs.

We have worked closely with Historic England and Society of Antiquaries of Scotland to undertake the Website Platform Development for The Research Frameworks Network.

For over 30 years ago, archaeologist have been creating Research Frameworks, summaries of our current knowledge on an area and future research goals. These have been static productions, books or PDFs, that quickly fall out of date. This platform will ensure the Frameworks stay up to date and we are able to track in real time which goals are being met, or not.

Landward Research is developing the live interface tutorials out of the learning content created by the other project members, based in Denmark and Netherlands.

This project will create Open Learning Resources (OLR) to teach archaeologists how to use Agent Based Modelling (ABM). The OLRs will employ a new innovation in learning, instead of creating traditional resources such as videos or written tutorials this project will embed the learning process directly into the ABM software. This will allow users to focus just on learning instead of trying to switching between different views i.e. from the tutorial PDF back to the software.
