The growth in offshore wind means more areas of the seabed are being explored to support development. This improves our understanding about the landscape that was inhabited thousands of years ago in the area we now know as the North Sea, long before it flooded.
This project pulls together into one place all the knowledge already available about the North Sea’s submerged prehistory (in the English sector) and creates a Framework with a set of questions and areas that require further exploration. This tool can then be used by archaeologists and developers to determine what further investigation is needed when planning and constructing new offshore wind farms, therefore being sensitive to the heritage of the seabed and managing this important environmental consideration.
Landward Research is leading the project with support from Wessex Archaeology and a steering group of consultants and academic researchers. The project is underway and is being funded by The Crown Estate and Historic England.
